I’ll keep this post short as I’ve been prepping most of the day and I slept in so I’m about two hours behind.
Quick fallout from yesterday looked like the same game we saw last Saturday in Olds but the Oilers let off the gas to start the third and were surprised by the Grizzlys and the game winning goal by Jack Goranson hurt the team’s moral in the last stretch. But for this young roster there is a higher learning curve and the magic word of PROCESS rings through on nights like this. From Olds’ standpoint way more composed and calm during the game than last season and that is only taught with experience and game time.
As for tonight… Well you know it’s Brooks and Okotoks and both teams will be irate going into tonight after games where both clubs should have picked up two points.
BANDITS: 0-1 8th in South Division OILERS: 1-1 5th in South Division
BANDITS ROAD 2013-14: 17-7-6 OILERS HOME: 0-1
BROOKS: 3-1 L Vs Camrose OKOTOKS: 4-3 L Vs Olds
SEASON SERIES 2013-14:
ALL-TIME VS BROOKS
26-16-3-1 (Two Ties Back in the Day, not counting those)
Both teams have gone through various changes through the season, both with a ton of missing d-men to their credit, Oilers went with a youth movement while the Bandits have the young guys around they have recruited some good 95 born players from places all-over the country especially in Ontario and the United States.
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Austin Plevy LW: Was on his way to Merrimack College this year but changed his mind to come back to the Bandits as a 20 year old has potential to lead the league in scoring.
Anthony Paskaruk: He’s played a ton of games in the AJHL… 228 to be exact and he’s been an Oiler killer in the past but was kept under control a season ago.
Michael Fredrick: Another guy who has won a lot of games in Brooks, really started to evolve and come out of the Brooks shadow in the second half of the season. After last night’s loss with 12 saves on 15 shots he will want to respond unless the Bandits go with Josh Davies.
Mitch Collett F: A very steady game out of Collett playing with Rhett Gardner. Can he score, last time he did against Brooks it was the Game winner in Game 5 of the South Final against them.
Jake Dube D: He’s one of the few veterans on D for the Oilers, the team gave up 4 goals in the exhibition tournament in the first 7 minutes against Brooks he’ll need to change that and help his team out.
Devon Fordyce G: Not the home debut the Oiler goaltender was looking for last night, you gotta believe there’s something about playing against his former team will have him dialed in to respond and turn things around from last night.
All in All I expect a lot of story lines to come across through out the day. As to filling out a complete line-up board it’s literally impossible but with young defense pairings on both teams I expect new faces from last night. It is the 10th Anniversary celebration night for the Oilers come out and attend this one as it’s also Western Night so dust off the Cowboy Hat or buy a Smithbilt Hat for 20 dollars as all proceeds go towards the Oilers Hockey Club. AJHL Commissioner will be on with us during the 2nd Intermission of the broadcast to talk about the league so far this season. Scott and I will be back again on the air at 6:45 with the pre-game and puckdrop at 7PM.
See you at the Rink!
The day is finally here (even though the Oilers season started last Saturday) The 10th Anniversary of the Okotoks Oilers in the AJHL will officially commence at home this weekend with a couple of rivalry games and who better than the last two teams they’ve faced in the playoffs.
It should a be an interesting tilt between the Grizzlys and Oilers after what happened last year in the playoffs, the Grizz upsetting the Oilers in five games before getting swept by Brooks the series after. Plus these two teams met last week up at the Bear’s Den and it was looking like deja vu all over again but the young Oilers squad would rally for a 3-2 OT Win away from the Pason as all three Oiler goals were scored by players with less than 3 games to their belt. Can they do it again let’s break it down.
GRIZZLYS: 0-1-1 5th in South Division OILERS: 1-0-0 T-2nd in South Division
GRIZZLYS ROAD 2013-14: 9-16-5 OILERS HOME 2013-14: 20-8-2
OLDS: 3-2 OTL Vs Okotoks OKOTOKS: 3-2 OTW @ OLDS
GRIZZLYS: 0-0-1 OILERS: 1-0-0
ALL-TIME VS OLDS:
First home game of the regular season for the Oilers so there’s going to be a little bit of jitters for plenty of these young men, when you have two of your returning defensemen in the line-up and a forward group that is very young and experience is not on your side right now it might be a little nerve racking early on but if it’s like how the Oilers played last Saturday the game will progress and players will find their groove. The veterans that are in this line-up will need to keep the troops on even keel. As for the opposition, I expect the Grizzlys to be in a foul mood after their opening weekend after being bounced by Camrose and let one get away from them against Okotoks. I’m going to say this again, the Grizzly style is not going to change anytime soon and that’s the way Brett Hopfe likes it from first game of exhibition to their final playoff game but it just increases game by game. Expect a ton of blocked shots from everyone on that roster… it’s the reason they won in the first round.
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Christopher Gerrie LW: Reigning AJHL and CJHL Rookie of the year… has goals in consecutive games so far this season.
Jack Goranson D: The forward turned D-man will go full time on the back-end this season, can he make up the difference with Nik Koberstein gone to the USHL?
Jordan Piccolino G: I doubt the little man (That’s the Italian translation for Piccolino I don’t actually mean he’s little he’s 6’1) wanted to start out like that after the high praise, watch for an elevation in his game.
Rhett Gardner C: Can the kid from Moose Jaw bring his game to that high echelon after many forward veterans have departed and prove NHL teams wrong for not drafting him? His work ethic will rub off on the new recruits.
Tucker Bender D: The kid with the coolest name in the AJHL (According to Colour Man Sean Emmett) will he show signs of brilliance like he did at Shattuck St. Mary’s and bring it to Alberta?
Matt McNair F: The Whitecourt acquisition a season ago, has found himself in the Oilers top six playing with Captain Tanner Ockey, he also might have been the best player in the playoffs for Okotoks. Will that continue?
Call it a reload or reconstructing for the Okotoks Oilers but mark my words this team will work hard all season for every point they earn. Am I saying they’re going to finish last in league? Absolutely not as I get to use the magic word that is common here in September and October and that’s a “PROCESS” camp may be over but there’s still evaluating to be done on this team as with any other team in the AJHL. I honestly don’t know what we’re gonna see tonight but it will be entertaining and fans should really get out this weekend and support this hockey club in their 10th Anniversary season.
A couple of notes to pass your way as the team traded Gen Bryshun to the Bonnyville Pontiacs for Futures yesterday and they’ve add Austin Shmoorkoof from the Red Deer Rebels after he was reassigned by the team he’s a big kid born in 97.
Get to the rink early as the Oiler’s own Jay Magnussen will be having a tailgate party with support from Sobeys in Okotoks and The 100.9’s Dan Bascombe will be doing every Afternoon Drive show on Friday night home games so say hi to Dan he’d love it.
Sean Emmett’s sister decided to get married when the season starts so he’ll be MIA for the weekend Scott Roblin will step in on Colour. First radio broadcast of the season tonight on The Eagle 100.9 Pre-game show starts at 6:45 puckdrop at 7 PM.
It will also be Western Night at the rink on SATURDAY against Brooks so wear your best Western outfit… I’m lucky I went to a Western Wedding and will be set for the occasion, maybe Scott will Cowboy Up too.
Looking forward to seeing all the fans return to what should be a fantastic weekend of Oilers hockey a PARTY AT THE PASON!
See You At The Rink!
It’s been a long summer but finally we’re back and I couldn’t be more excited to be calling games once again for you the fans of the Okotoks Oilers for my third straight season and a special one at that being the Oil’s 10th Anniversary!
Now that I’ve scraped most of the dirt off my work boots, it’s time to suit up and see what this year has for us…. I won’t tell you yet as the boys haven’t even played a game yet. (Rookie game tonight in Drumheller)
The Oilers season will kick off with veterans in the line-up starting this Thursday with the 3rd annual pre-season tournament featuring four of the best Jr A programs in the country. You can get your tickets on the Okotoks Oilers APP or at the ticket office.
A little house keeping as we’ll keep this short, our radio/webcast schedule is up on the link above you, same deal as last year. Was hoping for more but it just wasn’t in the cards but we’ll make due and if you’re a local business and would love to have your tires pumped on the radio… call The Eagle 100.9 sales department and they’ll take it from there as there are spots open for sponsorships.
Looking forward to see plenty of faces starting on Thursday Night when the Oilers will kick off the tournament against Fort McMurray at 7:45. As the weekend unfolds I’ll be able to have a better scope on what the team is looking like heading into the regular season and will update as much as I can on here. I am in my FINAL SEMESTER of University so I will be buckling down at times and will be MIA at times but I will be at as many games as I can get to Home and Away.
See You at the Rink…. FINALLY!
Another win in the month of the February for the Okotoks Oilers and a big one in terms of where the team could finish as a 5-1 victory over the Canmore Eagles lead to the Oilers with 69 points in the South, good enough for second spot with Drumhelller right behind them with 67. Just five spots off of Brooks for 1st in the Division. Here’s last night’s highlights.
It was all about the execution of the Oilers in the 1st of scoring on all three shots they had (I thought there was more) but an absolute snipe by Ambrose Firkus who had his second straight four point game and third four point night in an Oiler uniform. Connor Hartley continued to strive in the offensive department and John Edwardh continues to make his sophomore season an memorable one.
The Eagles had chances in the second but incredible team defense and goaltending was outstanding and why the Eagles only scored once on a Jakob Lavoie shot that I thought Jared D’Amico didn’t see. Matt McNair had an absolute bomb that Ryan Ferguson had no shot of getting it and Edwardh continued his strong play knocking down a weird one from the point on the Power Play from Tariq Hammond.
In a battle of D-man of the Year and Goaltender of the Year it was all green with D’Amico and Hammond out doing Trey Phillips who was quiet after gaffing an early breakaway and just a bad luck night for Ryan Ferguson.
The two teams will do battle again tonight at the Eagle’s Nest in Canmore where the Oilers could be in a great spot to finish no lower than 3rd in the South with a regulation win over Canmore. I’ll be making the trip and will bring updates as fast as I can tweet.
Once again congrats to Tariq Hammond and Jared D’Amico for being nominated for their respective awards; WELL DESERVED.
Our next Eagle 100.9 Broadcast is Friday February 21st when a possible 1st Round match-up in Olds comes to town for the final time in the regular season.
Updated RON and Three Stars up shortly.
See You at the Rink!
